The Old Woods Ebook Edition

Another one of my short stories has been converted into an ebook. This time it’s The Old Woods, a tale about a small country village, the power of local legends, two mysterious strangers and the old woods people are called to.

It’s available in mobi and epub formats so you can read it on the kindle, nook, kobo, mobile phones, tablets, on the site here or print it all out and weave a nice suit out of it.

The ebook edition is free and ready to download in the ebooks section of my site, along with the post-apocalyptic comedy, “The Last Cigarette” and my short horror piece, “White Noise”.

Poképocalypse!

To celebrate the release of Pokémon Black & White 2, I thought it’d be a good time to remind people about my article which proves theory that the Pokémon series is actually a post-apocalyptic horror game.

Find the article here.

Killed by Foxy Boxing

A few years ago, my brother and I started communicating only in horror movie reviews. Just this evening, he reminded me that these were good horror movie reviews. Well, reviews of good horror movies. It was all rather stream-of-consciousness, but we both found them entertaining.

After a couple of good reviews of J-Horror films, I gave a retort to my brother in reviews of Twilight, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, Triangle and Pontypool. Only a few survived to the site my brother set up, “Killed By Ghosts“, and we’re still finding the remnants of our previous reviews to put up. I know my brother’s proud of his Host review, but unsure where it is.

Once I set up Faked Tales, I abandoned Killed by Ghosts, but recently I’ve found a few really, really bad horror movies which deserve the kind of review which my brother and I love to send to each other.

I experienced the trauma of, “A Lure: Teen Fight Club” so you guys don’t have to, and now, here’s my review of it, on Killed By Ghosts.

But I Like Cyclops…

Everyone hates Scott “Slim” Summers, aka Cyclops from the X-Men. Not so. I’m a big fan, and in this article I start to explore the necessity for this kind of character, why people like and hate him, and my own reasons for thinking he’s not only an interesting character, but the protagonist of the X-Men.

This is part one of two articles about the leading characters in ensemble series and why they’re often perceived as bland, generic and the like. If you hate the X-Men and don’t want to hear me going on about them so much, part two will talk about The Great Gatsby and Lost. Yeah, an obvious pairing, I know.

Until then, here is almost two and a half thousand words which I managed to write about Cyclops.

Preparing for NaNoWriMo: Part One

It’s October the first, and that means one thing. National Novel Writing Month is just round the corner.

I’ve got eight articles which will show you how I plan to write a novel, especially this one. While not a guide for how you should write a book, it’s a guide about how you could write one. You’ll get to see information on the novel I am writing and examples from those I have written.

I’m going to aim for two of these a week, and hopefully the next will be up on Thursday.

The list of articles are:

What is NaNoWriMo and why am I reading this?

The Big Idea

Theme and Mood

Characters

Setting

Arc

Scene-by-Scene

These will make sense as time goes on, and hopefully you’ll see some of the organic process of planning a novel.

The Life and Death(s) of Professor X

A bit of a spoiler, but Professor X, the guy who made the X-Men, is dead. It was met with a collective sigh, and the tapping of keyboards from several bloggers, pointing out the number of times he’s died in the past.

I want to go one step further, and look into death and the diminishing of it in comics, using Professor X’s many deaths as a case study. What did these deaths accomplish? What was their legacy? Why was death used as a plot point?

So pretty much the same as the others, but with my level of overthinking the subject, to boot.

As a personal update, I’m currently working on:

* The prose sections of a comic, “Metal Made Flesh”, with the talented Simeon T Aston, the creator of the story and artist.

* Plans for my as yet untitled novel for NaNoWriMo. I’ll get into that with some clarification soon.

* Two short stories set in the world of my book, Lightning, and one which isn’t. The Lightning stories are completely seperate from my book (much like “So You Decided to Spontaniously Combust in Front of Your Friends, A Beginners Guide”) but expand the universe pre-emptively, and both will hopedully add depth to each other in time.

* More reviews for D+Pad, Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy, Hero Academy, the Final Fantasy VII remake and more.

The Battle of Jenkins Insurance

It’s midweek, and I sense a lot of you need a pick-me-up. Here’s new short story all about offices and the ghosts who live in them. The Battle of Jenkins Insurance.
I’ve been a bit quiet thanks to other projects, but I’ll have an update post about that soon.
