Everyone hates Scott “Slim” Summers, aka Cyclops from the X-Men. Not so. I’m a big fan, and in this article I start to explore the necessity for this kind of character, why people like and hate him, and my own reasons for thinking he’s not only an interesting character, but the protagonist of the X-Men.

This is part one of two articles about the leading characters in ensemble series and why they’re often perceived as bland, generic and the like. If you hate the X-Men and don’t want to hear me going on about them so much, part two will talk about The Great Gatsby and Lost. Yeah, an obvious pairing, I know.
